Congress will begin a new year next week. We would like to propose a New Year’s resolution for them.

After more than a century, it is time to take action on Puerto Rico’s status. Puerto Rico, home to millions of U.S. citizens, should not be a territory. Puerto Rico should be a State with full citizenship rights, or an independent nation, if that is the preference of the Puerto Rican people. Either way, it is time to provide Puerto Rico with a settled, permanent status. Statehood would put Puerto Rico on the path to peace and prosperity that the 50 States enjoy.

The United States should not own a colony in the 21st century.

This is a win-win situation. Obviously, Puerto Rico benefits from an end to the current territorial status and the United States benefits from the addition of a new state. But it’s good for Congress, too. At this point, the current Congress has accomplished the least of any Congress in modern times. What kind of legacy is that? If they resolve Puerto Rico’s political status, they will have a legacy to be proud of.

Congress has the responsibility to settle the status of Puerto Rico. Remind your legislators of their responsibility.
