At the summit, a group of representatives and citizen leaders presented the official results of the 2024 plebiscite to Congress. The attendees were as diverse as the people across the nation supporting statehood for Puerto Rico.
“Statehood means equal rights and equal responsibilities,” says Laws Garcia. “It’s about opportunities and a brighter future for our families and our communities.”
Who supports statehood for Puerto Rico?
1. A poll of more than 1,000 Americans by the Center for Public Opinion Research at Stetson University asked respondents which of the following would be their choice for the 51st state:
Canada
Greenland
Washington, D.C.
Puerto Rico
U.S. Virgin Islands
Guam
American Samoa
the Northern Mariana Islands
Top choice: Puerto Rico — 55% chose Puerto Rico from the 8 options.
2. A recent poll in Puerto Rico found that, given a choice between statehood and independence, 73% of voters chose statehood. A similar poll of voters in Florida found that 79% of Puerto Rican voters support statehood.
3. YouGov asked 7,200 Americans whether, if Puerto Rico voted for statehood, they would support or oppose it. 59% of those surveyed were in support, with only 16% saying they would oppose it.
4. Gallup has recorded majority support for statehood since the 1960s among Americans in general. 66% in the latest Gallup survey said they favor admitting Puerto Rico as a state, up from 59% in 1962.
5. 58% of Puerto Rico voters chose statehood in a three-way contest in November, 2024. This was the fourth referendum statehood won — all the votes in this century.
So who supports statehood for Puerto Rico? Americans, Puerto Ricans living in the states, voters in Puerto Rico — all support statehood. This is the status option that provides equality and justice for Puerto Rico as well as enriching the United States as a whole. The decision has been made. Now we need action from Congress.
