We received an email from a reader:
Dear Puerto Rico Statehood Council team,
As a proud Puerto Rican living on U.S. soil, I want to thank you for your continued leadership in advocating for the equality, dignity, and full democratic rights that our people deserve. I’m reaching out not only to express support but to urge that we, as a movement, push even harder for meaningful action—louder, broader, and bolder than ever.
Puerto Rico has been under U.S. rule since 1898—127 years of service, sacrifice, and civic participation without full representation. The people of the island have spoken through multiple referendums, including a clear pro-statehood vote in 2024. But Congress continues to delay, ignore, and sideline our claim.
As someone who shares heritage, history, and family with the island, I feel a deep responsibility to speak up. I may not live in Puerto Rico today, but I am just as Puerto Rican as anyone who does—and this fight is all of ours to carry. Whether on the island or the mainland, we are one community, united in the pursuit of equality.
It’s especially troubling to hear fringe political voices entertain ideas like Alberta, Canada, becoming the 51st state. That’s not just unrealistic—it’s insulting. Puerto Rico is already part of the U.S., and its 3.2 million citizens have been loyal Americans for generations. They should not be last in line—or worse, forgotten.
Please continue the mission with intensified outreach and visibility. Whether it’s social campaigns, congressional testimonies, or local town halls, know that you have supporters like me ready to mobilize alongside you.
Thank you for all that you do. Let’s keep the pressure on—until Puerto Rico claims its rightful place as the 51st state.
With solidarity and respect,
Margaret Dudonis
Ms. Dudonis is absolutely right, and we appreciate her inspiring letter. If you live in a state, please remember that Puerto Rico has no voting representatives in Congress. The legislators representing the states are the ones who make the decisions for Puerto Rico. We rely on stateside supporters to reach out to their senators and representatives.
We’re preparing more in-person events both on the Island and on the mainland, but we are not limited in communication. Tell your friends and family and your representatives. Wear and carry your colors with merchandise that makes a statement. Help us amplify your voice with our letters project. Together, we can succeed.
